Materials needed for the reflective activity:
-One copy of the Talk Moves Reflection Sheet for every staff member -One colored set of the Four Pictures from the reflective activity |
Directions:
1. Post the colored copies of the four pictures from the reflective activity in four different corners within the meeting space being used. 2. Direct teachers to think about their use of talk moves as outlined in the book Classroom Discussions: Using Math Talk to Help Students Learn, Grades 1-6 for a few moments. 3. Direct teachers to turn their attention to the four pictures posted around the room. Tell the staff members to select ONE picture that best represents where they are with their understanding and use of the talk moves from the text. After several moments of quiet contemplation, direct teachers to move to the corner where the picture they identify with resides. 4. Once all staff members have selected a corner, have them break into groups of 3 or 4 to discuss WHY they chose the picture they did and how it related to their understanding of talk moves and use of them within their classrooms. 5. After groups have shared, have them return to a desk/table to complete the actual reflection sheet before being dismissed from the staff meeting. All reflection sheets should be collected and used to inform future staff development needs. |
Next Steps:
