Section 2: SUSTAIN
Teachers were given two options to choose from in order to practice using the talk moves. Each of these options is listed below with links to materials used in preparing for the differentiated staff development. All of this work began with all staff members reflecting upon and completing the Staff Development Module Planning Sheet, linked below.
OPTION 1: Complete an observation cycle with the Instructional Coach.
Teachers selecting this option participated in a full observation cycle consisting of:
During year 2, the observation form reflects the "Section 1: REVIEW" work teachers completed earlier in the year. This form also includes a section where the lesson could be analyzed with the information found in the Mathematics Process Goals "Student Look-fors" for Mathematical Communication. The observation form may be accessed by clicking on the button below.
Teachers selecting this option participated in a full observation cycle consisting of:
- a pre-observation conversation where the content of the observation is discussed, the teacher can share exactly what he/she wants to receive feedback on, and the method of data collection is agreed upon,
- an observation and data collection, and
- a post-observation conversation during which the collected data is shared with the teacher, the teacher is able to reflect on the experience and the collected data, and the Instruction Coach can give additional feedback as well as set a purpose for subsequent observations.

OPTION 2: Videotape your lesson to review the talk moves.
Teachers were given the option of having one of their lessons videotaped. The teacher would then watch the video and self-analyze the video prior to having a follow-up conversation with the Instructional Coach. Both the teacher and Instructional Coach used the same observation form as a basis for the follow-up conversation held at a later date. The observation form may be accessed by clicking on the button below.
