Mapcrunch: Random Google Street View B-I-N-G-O!
At the end of the school year, I was searching for a way for 5th grade students at Wenonah Elementary in our 1-to-1 computer classrooms to be engaged in learning, without it seeming like just another assignment, lecture, or lesson. Enter MapCrunch! MapCrunch allows visitors several ways to access Google Street Views online. Using the "stealth" mode transports students to other countries blindly! This allowed our students to visit different locations around the world and to use problem solving to determine where they were.
In addition to determining their location, students are challenged to perform additional Google searches to answer questions that go beyond merely looking at a street view and into actual online research. Many of the questions cross content areas as they must utilize mathematics vocabulary, social studies skills, problem solving, inferencing and drawing conclusions skills, writing skills, and research skills to complete the spaces on the BINGO board. Several of the BINGO squares require a written answer, others a friend to initial that they witnessed the required item online, and still others require a screen shot to back up what was witnessed.
The button below allows you access to the BINGO board that the students used.
