Fifth Grade Morning Math
Mornings along the 5th grade hallway at Wenonah Elementary School have become a time of mathematics practice. As students arrive to school, they can choose to go to breakfast or they can report to Room 106 until school begins at 8:00am. In 5th grade, students practice math fact fluency through two and if need be three person math games. Upon arrival, students are directed to pair off and gather the needed materials for the game they are playing.
On this page, I will share the games the students utilize each week as well as the materials needed and the skills focus addressed within each game! Most of the games listed are FREE reproducibles that I have found online. Many of the games may be laminated or placed in plastic sheet protectors in order to allow each game board to be used over and over again. I have decided to print some of the games so that they only take up 1/2 a sheet of paper. This allows four game boards to be printed on one sheet of paper (utilizing both the front and back). Printing the boards in this manner allows for faster set-up (using crayons or pencils to mark spaces rather than game pieces) and less time spent "messing up the board" and having to "fix" it. For some games that require movement along a set path within the game, I still shrink it down, but use buttons as game pieces rather than actual game pieces.

A few words about dice. Dice drive me crazy! Sometimes, when students "roll" the dice they fly across the room inevitably hitting someone or landing under something large and immovable. This year, I have purchased small plastic snack containers (4/package) at the Dollar Tree to combat this situation. Any time dice are needed for a game, I simply place the dice in the snack container. Students have been instructed to NOT open the containers. This has prevented dice loss and me from losing my sanity!
